Erudite is in charge of education and research, Candor is in charge of law and justice, and Amity is the faction that grows the majority of the food and provides care. A child is born into a faction, but when they reach the age of sixteen, they are given an aptitude test to help them choose which faction they will live in their entire life.

People who want to leave their own factions are free to do so, but they have to say that they will stick by their own family's faction. The concept is sound, as each faction teaches and cultivates traits necessary for their roles; however, the reality is rivalry and jealousy.

When the story begins, Beatrice is a member of the Abnegation faction who is sixteen years old. She was raised to be completely selfless, but she doesn't think she fits the faction's ideals. Every teen over the age of sixteen takes an aptitude test to determine which faction they should join.

Open Hands

On a specific day, Beatrice and Caleb, her older brother, are among the teens taking the tests. A member of the Dauntless faction administers a test to Beatrice, and the results label her as a "Divergent." information.

Open Hands

Beatrice is cautioned by the woman that revealing her identity would put her life in jeopardy. Beatrice goes home and begins considering her options based solely on that information. Caleb decides to join the Erudites at the Choosing Day ceremony, and Beatrice initially believes she will have to stay in Abnegation because she despises having to leave her parents alone. She does, however, make the decision to depart and join the Dauntless.

When she gets there, she finds that the leaders have forgotten about protecting the city and its inhabitants. Cruelty, on the other hand, is taught and expected. She learns that a Dauntless by the name of Four is the son of an Abnegation leader after meeting him.

Books

Beatrice is able to get through the initiation process without getting hurt, but she finds out that the Erudite had planned to use the Dauntless to overthrow the Abnegation. Through a simulation device, the Erudites take control of the Dauntless, and the Dauntless faction wage a bloody war against the Abnegation.

Books

Before the situation is resolved by Beatrice, Caleb, and Four, victims include Beatrice's parents and others. The three are taken in by the Amity faction near the end of the story, though Beatrice is aware that they can't stay there forever.
