When they receive the fax, Alan Grant and his graduate student Ellie Sattler are busy excavating dinosaur nesting grounds in Snakewater, Montana. The X-ray, which precisely resembles the body of a procompsognathid dinosaur, puzzles them.

Before heading to Isla Nublar in Costa Rica, John Hammond, along with Alan and Ellie, picks up mathematician Ian Malcolm and computer systems engineer Dennis Nedry. Don Gennaro, John Hammond's attorney, is already on the plane and has requested that the experts visit the island to evaluate its safety.

When the group reaches the island, they learn that John Hammond has used amber-fossilized mosquito DNA to fund genetically engineered dinosaurs. The animals both awe and terrorize the guests simultaneously.

Nobody is aware that Dennis Nedry, a computer engineer, has collaborated with Biosyn, a rival bioengineering company, to steal dinosaur embryos. Dennis intends to carry out the crime by cutting off all of the park's power and security systems, including the electric fences that keep the dinosaurs and humans apart.

Dennis turns off the security and power systems while the tour group is touring the park. He plans to drive to the meeting location, drop off the embryos, and then return within six minutes. Alan and the kids attempt to return to the lodge while people in the control room attempt to restore power and calm dangerous dinosaurs.v

Alan, Ellie, and Don make the decision to search for the velociraptor nest and determine whether or not all of the island's animals are present before assistance arrives. The raptors flee the nesting area and onto the beach before they can get a final count. They look excited to see a passing freighter ship.

Alan concludes that the raptors want to migrate and wonders if they have already done so. Before Alan can finish his study of the raptors, Costa Rican authorities arrive to pick up the survivors, and the island is bombed.

Alan and the other islanders are questioned about what took place on Isla Nublar while he is held captive in San Jose for the following weeks. Alan is visited by Dr. Guitierrez, who inquires about a peculiar pattern of crop-eating that is emerging in a mountainous region of the country.
