The year is 1945. While Frank Randall was serving in the war, Claire Randall worked as an army nurse for the past six years. She is a woman who wants to start a family and reconnect with her husband after six years apart. When she was 5 years old, her parents died, leaving her in the care of her uncle.

Seven years have passed since Claire and Frank's wedding. In a bed and breakfast in Scotland, they live happily together. Frank researches his past in the library because he is very interested in his Scottish heritage. Frank and Claire travel together to the standing stones near the town's edge to secretly observe the rituals the town women perform together. These women are referred to as witches in the town.

In the beginning, Jonathan Randall, Frank's ancestor, attacks Claire. He tries to force himself on her as a rude Captain. She is saved by Jamie Fraser, who is Jonathan Randall's rescuer. His uncles, Colum and Dougal, accompany him and cautiously take in Claire.

Claire is consumed by thoughts of escaping and going back to the standing stones, so she can get back to her own time and to Frank. Events unfold that make it impossible for her to return. Jamie is a wanted man with a price on his head for a crime he did not commit

Dougal marries Claire and Jamie in an effort to assist them both. If Claire is married to Jamie and taken in by his MacKenzie uncles, Jonathan cannot pursue her. Claire feels the need to tell Jamie the truth about her past as they get closer. He listens, but his love for her causes him to be torn.

He directs her to return to her own time after taking her to the standing stones. Due to her loyalty to Jamie and the fact that it has been months since she left her own time, Claire is fighting a internal battle of wills. She decides to stay with Jamie despite not knowing what to do. The two cannot be separated once the decision is made. They promise to be together regardless of what befalls them.

They return to Jamie's house in Lallybroch, where Jenny and her husband Ian are. Greet them. Since then, Jenny and Ian have had a child together named Jamie. They spend as much time as they can at Lallybroch; yet, it is fleeting, as the English are after Jamie for the violations he's blamed for.

Jamie and Claire end up at the Abbey in France in the end. Jamie slowly recovers as a result of them accepting the monks' assistance. Their devotion to one another wins out.

Jamie is not comforted by this; However, Claire and he move on. In the final chapter, Claire tells Jamie that she is expecting a child.
