District Twelve, the coal mining district, is where Katniss Everdeen, her mother, and her sister Prim reside. Since Katniss's father passed away when she was eleven years old, she has been responsible for providing for her family.

As retribution for a long-gone rebellion, each year's participation in the Hunger Games is required of the twelve Districts. Each District must send two children between the ages of 12 and 18 to compete to the death for the Games. They fight in an arena designed by the Gamemakers, and the entire event is designed to entertain spectators.

A prep team that includes their mentor Haymitch, their sponsor Effie Trinket, and their stylists Cinna and Portia grooms Katniss and Peeta for the Hunger Games.
