The story of The Two Towers continues in The Return of the King.Over Minas Tirith, the entire sky soon becomes obscured as the darkness emanates from Mordor.Aragorn decides to travel the Paths of the Dead to Gondor because he is aware that the Riders might not reach the city in time to protect it from Mordor's attack.


Denethor sends Faramir to Osgiliath in Gondor to fend off Mordor's armies.Even with Gandalf's assistance, they must give up the field despite holding position for as long as possible.Faramir is hit by a poison arrow as they retreat to the city, but he survives.

The Riders arrive just in time to prevent the Mordor army from breaching Minas Tirith's defenses.King Theodon is killed by the Black Captain, and Lady Eowyn and Merry heroically kill the Black Captain;However, Lady Eowyn has sustained severe injuries.The Mordor powers refocus, yet Aragorn shows up.

Together with Gandalf, Pippin stops Denethor from killing Faramir.Denethor commits suicide instead.Aragorn enters Minas Tirith and tends to the wounded from the battle by the Black Captain.The prophecy regarding the upcoming Gondor king is fulfilled by this.

When Sam and Frodo reach Oroduin, also known as Mount Doom, Frodo is carried to the top by Sam.Frodo is overcome by the power of the Ring and refuses to give it up when they reach the Cracks of Doom.

Aragorn's forces defeat Mordor's armies at the Black Gate, ending Sauron's reign of terror.To save Sam and Frodo, Gandalf boarded Gwaihir and flew to Oroduin.Gondor is spared the darkness.Arwen is married to Aragorn, who becomes King of Gondor.

The recovery of Minas Tirith and the surrounding areas has begun. When the Hobbits return to the Shire, they discover that the Men's police state has destroyed their homes.

Discovering Saruman's involvement in the rebellion, the four companions set out to oust the oppressors and exact their vengeance on the Hobbits.Wormtongue betrays Saruman and kills him.

ENDING -  The Hobbits reconstruct the Shire and resume their normal lives.Sam has children.Frodo makes the decision to leave the Shire, so he travels with Gandalf, Bilbo, and the other Ring bearers across the Great Sea to the tranquil West.
