Dorothy and her Uncle Henry and Aunt Em live on a farm in Kansas at the beginning of the story. Dorothy, her house, and her dog Toto are all swept away to the Land of Oz when a cyclone strikes the farm one day.

She lands in a strange and beautiful land full of animals that can talk and magical creatures.

Dorothy before long discovers that the Place where there is Oz is partitioned into four districts, each managed by a strong witch. The Great Witch of the North illuminates Dorothy that to get back, she should go to the Emerald City and request the Wizard from Oz for help.

Dorothy has a number of traveling companions. The first one is a scarecrow who wants a brain, the second one is a tin woodman who wants a heart, and the third one is a cowardly lion who wants courage. All three of them want to be human.

On their journey to the Emerald City together, they encounter numerous challenges, including attacks from flying monkeys and a lethal poppy field.

They are given an opportunity to speak with the Wizard of Oz when they finally reach the Emerald City. However, when it becomes clear that the wizard is deceitful, he is unable to assist them. Instead, he sends them on a mission to eliminate the Wicked Witch of the West, who is in charge of Oz's western region.

The group embarks on their perilous mission and encounters numerous obstacles along the way. They return to the Emerald City to claim their rewards from the Wizard after eventually killing the witch.

Dorothy receives the means to return home, and the scarecrow, lion, and tin woodman all get what they want. Dorothy wakes up in her own bed after returning to Kansas with Toto. She is overjoyed to be home, but she is also sad to be away from her friends.

She does, however, realize that her adventure in Oz taught her a lot of valuable lessons, and she will always treasure her memories of it.
