The Capitol, a city with a lot of resources that keeps the other Districts under its control, is in charge of Panem. District Twelve, the coal mining district, is where Katniss Everdeen, her mother, and her sister Prim reside. Since Katniss's father passed away when she was eleven years old, she has been responsible for providing for her family.

As retribution for a long-gone rebellion, each year's participation in the Hunger Games is required of the twelve Districts. Each District must send two children between the ages of 12 and 18 to compete to the death for the Games. They fight in an arena designed by the Gamemakers, and the entire event is designed to entertain spectators.

In the arena, Katniss always tries to fight fair, even becoming friends with a 12-year-old named Rue who reminds her of her younger sister. In the arena, they are constantly in danger from the Gamemakers and other tributes.

Katniss sets out to find Peeta when the Gamemakers change the rules so that two tributes from the same district can win, even though she initially believes that Peeta is working against her. However, it soon becomes clear that he has been trying to protect her. She is able to procure the medication he requires, saving him from death. Books

Because they pretend to be in love once they're a team, it's easier for them to get gifts from sponsors. They finally return to the lake in order to satisfy the Gamemakers' desire for a battle, but they are horrified and surprised by the vicious genetic mutations that represent the dead tributes.
